New forum

Since you are here, I guess you have read the message on the front of mipsen.dk.

Basicly everything should work as it did on the old forum, but obviously there are a lot of new things. As I find out what the system can do, I'll post more info in this topic. The full list of comparisons between the old version and the new is here: http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/ (it is a bit technical).

So basically, what do you think about it? Please keep in mind that it is far from complete and will require a lot of work on visuals, cleaning and importing of old custom features we had on the old board. I'm asking what you think because I would like to make the change, but only if you guys want me to. If you like part of it, but something is really annoying you, etc avatars on the right, remember that I can fix it :)

Feel free to go nuts and try out all the new things, I will be able to roll back to the old forum no matter how much you mess up everything (however if I roll back, everything posted here will be lost)! When you're done, please comment and vote.

If we decide we like the system, I'll be willing to put a lot of effort into making a new template, maybe similar to the old one (or whatever we decide).

If you cannot login, you need to request a new password on the login form and an email will be sent to you.

If you have any problems, you can email me on admin@mipsen.dk

Overall, new toys are a good thing and I do like a lot of the new syles.

A couple of things for me;

1) I like stickies having their own little box at the top of the screen under the announcements.
2) Is there any way we could continue to have announcements as board specific rather than group specific? Equally, having them sticked at the top seems to play havoc with some boards (esp the Guild wars one :)).
3) A chess type program integrated into the forums would = win :) (as we've already spoken about on steam)
4) Maybe while you're in the process of shaking it all up, a couple of forum consolidations as well? Guild Wars only really needs one forum now (don't need PVP) and equally recruitment could be combined into site information. Also is the NTS board still needed at all, I have no idea what's going on with it all so feel free to ignore than one if irrelevant :P
5) I think I probably do prefer the avatar information being on the left side, but that's only because I'm used to that. Certainly not a big deal but I think it's more natural for it to be far left.
6) Uploading attachments (though I have no idea how that'll work yet) would be awesome, as does multiple quotes and polls. Custom BB buttons and profiles entries seem pretty cool too.
7) Seems like you get a lot more functionality as an admin as well which will no doubt be very useful in the future.

Other than that mate, I think it's quite tasty, and with avatars, banners and templates it could look real shiny. Be nice to get a new template going as well, one that isn't quite so Guild Warsy perhaps since we play so many other games as well now.

Nice work mate :)

Hurray, it's phpBB3 (''\(^_^)/'')

This makes Lily very happy indeed :3

I for one love the added functionality that comes with the upgrade, I mean just have a looksie at the user control panel... it's sweet in my opinion.

One thing I also like a lot is the sub-forum feature, should keep things nice and tidy. It could indeed be a nice idea to clean up some of the forums, though that's not top-priority right now.

What I definitely agree with is switching to a custom template though, as this one isn't really that fancy, plus it hurts my eyes to be honest :P

I personally think it's more natural for the information to be on the right when it comes to reading posts, but it does take a bit of getting used to. If we're going to have anything like a portal like we did, it's going to look quite a bit better this way, but that's just my opinion of course.
That said, if we are going to get a portal at all, I would prefer avatars to be on the right, and the portal options on the left (Or vice versa), and not both on one side :)

Chimpy wrote:Uploading attachments (though I have no idea how that'll work yet) would be awesome

I'm sorry Chimpy, I don't really agree on this one <.<

I'm not sure how big the database for the forum is really, but I can imagine attachments clogging up a fair bit. Uploading stuff offsite is generally easier I find, but this is just my personal opinion of course.

Last but hopefully not least, for the layout I'm willing to try and create some new banners if need be :)

You shouldn't worry about attachments. I am only using 230 MB of the 3 GB that is available and the max attachment size is set to 1 MB... so there is a long way to go.

With regards to the template, I dont really like the default either. I'm pretty sure I'll make something myself in gray/black colours and use the old rotating banners. I dont really know about the avatars, I'll decide if I work on a template.

I dont know about a portal yet. I think I would like one, but I haven't decided yet.

Keep the suggestions comming, it's very encouraging to hear what you think :)

Well i'm not loving this all white layout so far but i imagine that can be changed.

suggestions from me are...

(1) Switch avatars back to left hand side!

(2) If were working on new system can we have a "mark subject/slash sub forum read button" in the main index? For myself i don't play/care for guild wars anymore so i'd rather not go into a sub forum to mark them read i'd rather just do it from the main page.

Other than than sort the foreground/background colours out because the white/blue thing hurts like a mofo!

If it's a step forward, I'm all for it.
I'm used to the avatars on the left, but if there's a logical reason that they're better on the right, I think I could get used to it.

I really like it.

The Good:
The additional new options I do really really like: this larger typing window, more search options, more buttons overall etc etc. Woot for temp ban option :-D and better moderator controls, more elaborate poll options, and attaching images which can save the efford of going through imageshack which can be dead slow. Actually all new controls are very great.

The Bad:
Like others said the avatars please to go left, I like to see first who posted and then read the post so interpret the context, instead of the other way round. Secondly, not so sure about the stickies. Announcements is a nice option, but the stickies dont really stick out anymore, maybe another box below the announcements might work. This connects also to the icons in front of the posts which are a bit awkward, not directly clear what they mean, but I guess that is easy to change.

The Ugly:
eeeeek my eyesss! You will have a lot of work on the colour scheme etc, default isn't good at all.

I've already said my 2 cents on steam last night :D I don't like the template, and I loved the previous layout. You said you'd work on a new layout, etc. etc.

So I'm all in favour of a step forward for the forum. The template just hurts my eyes so bad I'd rather watch Twilight New Moon.

I'm all for the change. Site is all white and clinical though, hurts my nerd eyes.

As for Chimpy's question on NTS. Please keep it. It's not over it's just paused. Akito is very busy with his company Ravensoft but I know it's one of the area's he is going to work on early next year as an ongoing interest.

Hmm, I don't get it... there is one vote for "No", yet all posts seem to be in favour (generally)

Also, am I the only one who prefers the avatars to be on the right? o.0 (You can still see on the left who posts)

Oh and there is one phpBB3 feature which I love:

Ever since I used it already two years ago on the UIE forums I've been in favour. I do absolutely like it.
Yea, of course the background of the old forum was better, but this is just the basic one so yea.
And well, I don't really mind on which side the avatars are. It's just a matter of getting used to. That said, I am still really looking where everything is, but that's not really a bad thing.

If you were wondering lily it was me who voted no. I was tired and cranky so even though my post wasn't really anti the new board i felt generally i didn't like it but that's just because i was so used to the old one.
